Seattle, Washington, Joint meeting of:
THE ARMENIAN RUGS SOCIETY & THE SEATTLE TEXTILE & RUG SOCIETY

Armenian Rugs Society membership coordinator Thea Sand is working with the Seattle Textile and Rug Society and with the ARS to plan a very exciting meeting in Seattle on August 18, 2007. A number of ARS members are coming to the event. We're staying at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel, 1400 Sixth Avenue, zip code 98101. There are apparently different deals, but rates we were quoted are around $199 a night (possibly a little less on the internet). The phone # is (206) 621-9000. Some ARS people are planning to arrive around noon on Friday the 17th. Levon Der Bedrossian is selecting a restaurant where ARS folks will meet for dinner on Friday night. Saturday, the event starts at 5 pm, so there will be some time for some sightseeing before then.

If you’re not already planning to do so, please consider attending! It should be fun!

Saturday, August 18, 2007

Emmanuel’s is pleased to announce a joint meeting of The Armenian Rug Society and the Seattle Textile and Rug Society in conjunction with the 100th year celebration of Emmanuel’s Rug & Upholstery Cleaners.

Emmanuel’s was founded in Seattle in 1907 by John Manoug Emmanuelian an Armenian emigrant from Aghin, a village in central Turkey. He originally came to New York in 1904 and worked there for Donjian Inc., one of the largest rug importers at that time. John started out in Seattle selling rugs door to door from the street car, eventually opening a showroom in downtown Seattle at the corner of Fourth and University in the Stimson Building. The original cleaning plant was at 104 W. Roy St.

Speaker Barry O’Connell will discuss the linguistics of rugs and what makes an Armenian rug.
Barry O’Connell is the author of Oriental Rugs and Persian Rugs: the O'Connell Notes (spongobongo), Notes on Oriental Rugs and Persian Rugs by Barry O'Connell (persiancarpetguide) as well as numerous other articles, on – line rug blogs and newsgroups. He also helped Harold Keshishian write his hadjin pages.
