INSCRIBED ARMENIAN KELIM May, 2008 Karabagh

Inscribed "1932 Tiv (in the year) Hayastan (either a person’s name or the country, Armenia), -- Ago" (man’s name) (February, 14) Name: Kelim Country: Karabagh Notes: All wool, weft faced. It is interesting, HAYASTAN (Armenia) in Armenian characters, is either misspelled or intentionally written in a different manner. However, when read, it is phonetically correct. “Ago” should be the name of the artist. This kelim, first displayed here upside down, now, shown with the inscription in the upper left, is consistent with kelim # 97, p. 132, published in ‘Passages’, Murray L. Eiland Jr. 2002. Also, the figure becomes reminiscent of a church dome with cross on top. See also #66, p. 101.
